Bao Xianzhi: Being One Person like A Bitter Gourd

鲍先志是在"苦海"里泡大的。1岁丧母，5岁丧父，由叔祖父收养；15岁投身革命，19岁参加红军，与我军著名将领、被认为是电视剧《亮剑》李云龙原型王近山和开国上将陈锡联义结金兰，且为兄长，是电视剧《亮剑》中赵刚政委的原型。参加过夜袭阳明堡、百团大战、万县剿匪等战斗战役，威震敌胆。

Bao Xianzhi grew up with suffering many hardships. He was adopted by his granduncle because he lost his mother at the age of one, and his father died when he was five. At the age of 15, he was devoted to the revolution, and at the age of 19, he joined the Red Army. He was the real-life version of the political commissar Zhao Gang in the TV series named Drawing Sword. He became sworn brothers with the founding general Chen Xilian and the famous general Wang Jinshan, who was the real-life version of Li Yunlong in Drawing Sword. He fought many hard battles that terrify the enemies, including the night attack on Yangmingbu, the Hundred-Regiment Campaign, the Bandits Suppression in Wan County and so on.

鲍先志对家属子女要求非常严格，他常常教育子女要始终保持艰苦奋斗的政治本色。子女结婚，鲍先志只给100元钱。组织上给他配的专车，家人谁也不准用。

Bao Xianzhi was very strict with his family members, and he often taught his children to maintain the political nature of plain living and hard work. When his children got married, he only gave them 100 yuan. Besides, his families were not allowed to drive the special car that the organization allotted to him.

但鲍先志对身边的工作人员，却总是关怀备至。在得知家中的炊事员得了肝炎后，鲍先志亲自与其谈心、联系医疗单位，并拿出500元贴补医用，这在当时不是一笔小数目。不仅如此，他还亲自将小伙子送上火车，嘱咐他安心治疗。

However, Bao Xianzhi showed his utmost solicitude to the staff around him. After knowing the cook in his home got hepatitis, Bao had a talk with him and contacted the medical treatment unit in person. He gave the cook 500 yuan as the medical expense, which was a huge amount of money at that time. What’s more, he personally sent the young man aboard the train, asking him to receive treatment at ease.

鲍先志经常给子女讲，做人要像"苦瓜"一样，苦瓜无论和什么菜一起炒，只有苦瓜苦，而其它菜不但不苦反而更香。其子女都把"苦瓜"精神作为立身做人的行为准则，并且讲给儿孙，使之成为鲍家的"传世家训"。

Bao Xianzhi often told his children that one should be like a bitter gourd in that no matter what food it is fried with, the other food becomes more fragrant instead of being bitter but the bitter gourd is still bitter. His children all consider the spirit of “bitter gourd” as the code of conduct for life and teach it to their children and grandchildren, making it the “family motto” handed down from generation to generation in their family.
